Digital Poster Printing
Digital poster printing technology enables us to print large photo quality full colour posters on demand with low unit cost with the type of digital poster printing technology required being dependent on the size of the posters required. For A4 posters and A3 posters there is a wide choice of printers available which can be broadly categorised as either Laser or ink jet.
Digital Poster Printing with Laser Printers
Laser printers are capable of printing up to 6000 A4 pages per hour dependent on the intensity of the graphic being printed and are faster than inkjet technology. This makes Laser printers ideal for medium runs of A4 flyer posters. Laser printers contain an internal Raster Image Processor (RIP) which stores the page or image data sent from a computer and uses this data to print from. An internal laser uses the stored data to create an electrostatic image on a revolving drum from which toner is applied to the paper passing through the machine. The paper then passes through a 200C fusing unit that fuses the toner to the paper. Full colour laser printers normally use four toner colours – cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK) with the more common types limited by the paper size and thickness they can print onto. Also, the cost of borderless or ‘edge-to-edge’ digital laser poster printers is prohibitive thus many companies print posters with at least an 8mm white border around the printed image. Laser printers produce excellent results and are relatively colour-fast, however toner won’t endure creasing or folding and will crack can spoil the appearance.
Digital Inkjet Poster Printing – Technology & Suppliers
There are various types of inkjet printing technologies available but each is comparable in terms of speed and quality. Inkjet printers rarely have built-in RIPs and so can take longer to print a page or image – they print the information they have received and then wait for more information to load before continuing to print. Pages are printed through the movement of print heads and ink chambers and produce smooth, photo quality images that can be further enhanced by using papers with various finishes and thicknesses. Unless colour fast or die-sublimation are used, ink jet prints fade faster than laser printed posters but and if rubbed can easily smudge.
